Heartland Heritage Trail
The Accredited Visitor Information Centres based in Burra, Gawler and Kapunda have joined forces with community members based in Auburn, Balaklava, Eudunda, Mintaro, Riverton and Two Wells to create a scenic driving trail of heritage discovery throughout the Clare Valley Touring Region.
Why not use the Heartland Heritage Trail for your journey to and from Burra, instead of the Barrier Highway ?
Brochures are available by contacting the Burra Visitor Centre.
Introduction
Today, the mellow, ever changing landscapes of this region, belie the dynamic role they played the fortunes of South Australia.
People came to the heartland with vision and hope for a venture that would last the remainder of their lives. Their passion for a better future, has provided a significant legacy, rich in history and culture, just waiting to be discovered.
Sheep runs and grain farms began to form, later becoming the heartbeat of South Australia, but the greatest boon to the region and the colony was the discovery of copper in the mid-1840s, first at Kapunda and then Burra. These two mines generated untold, almost inconceivable wealth, that flowed through the colony, saving it from economic doldrums. These funds established the family fortunes that built Adelaides grand houses, shaped civic life and funded cultural aspirations.
Manufacturing, viticulture and winemaking changed the landscape yet again, creating another layer of heritage.
The Heartland Heritage Trail is built on traditional Aboriginal lands on which the old bullockies, stagecoaches, stock routes, and the steel tracks of the old steam locomotives were laid. It leads you through seven towns that show how much of colonial South Australia was forged outside the capital
Take them as a starting point for your journey. Youll find heritage walks that dig deeper into the past, museums and centres that tell the stories, and drives that lead you to rolling country with its own heritage secrets.
Its a tangible and evocative legacy.
